The Ecological Organic Agriculture (EOA) initiative in Nigeria has urged farmers to embrace organic farming to boost overall well-being of the environment.
The call was made by the Country Coordinator, Ecological Organic Agriculture initiative, Dr. Olugbenga Adeoluwa in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.
Adeoluwa said that the need to adopt organic living, which comprises consumption of organic food and products, could not be over-emphasised; noting that such would improve the health of humans, animals and the environment.
“There is a need to explore alternatives to pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers and other non-eco-friendly agricultural inputs through the use of organic methods.” He said.
The Coordinator who lamented that poor agricultural funding policies was the bane to adequate attention to the organic agriculture sub-sector called on the Federal Government to strengthen the quality assurance for organic produce and products through appropriate certification .
“The Federal Government should pursue the promised 700,000 jobs in the agro-allied sector under the ‘Strategic Framework and Implementation Plan for Job Creation and Youth Employment’ and adequately involve the organic agriculture sub-sector.” Adeoluwa added.
While advising the administrators of the national Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (HGSFP) and care givers to adopt organic produce and products for improved health, Adeoluwa urged the media to create more awareness on the benefits of organic living through appropriate media activities.
