Nigeria will outstrip South Africa and become the largest maize producer in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) in the 2018/19 production season,
A year ago South Africa’s contribution to the production of maize in SSA was approximately 20% for the 2017/18 season.
“Sub-Saharan African produced approximately 20% of SSA maize production utilising a relatively small area of 2.6 million hectares. In contrast, countries such as Nigeria planted 6.5 million hectares in the 2017/18 production season, but only harvested 14% of sub-Saharan Africa’s maize,” Sihlobo said in the latest Agbiz newsletter.
Maize is also known as corn, it is the most important grain crop in South Africa and an important staple food for 1.2billion people in SSA and Latin American. It is a warm-weather crop; it is unsuitable for areas with a mean daily temperature of below 19oC. or where the mean summer temperature falls below 23oC. Maize is produce widely throughout the world in a range of agro ecological environment. More maize is produced annually than any other grain. About 50 species exist and consist of different colors, textures , shapes and sizes. White, yellow and red varieties are the most common types. The white and yellow varieties are preferred by most people depending on the region.
