How good people averted coup at NACCIMA 59th AGM

A coup attempt was averted by some good people in the Organised Private Sector (OPS) led by Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, CON., SAN, four time cabinet Minister and current President of Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI).

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) had convened in Kaduna and part of the activities marked for it was investiture of Hajia Saratu Iya Aliyu as 20th President of the association as well as election of some principal officers to fill the position of the Second National President.

However the association yesterday failed to conduct election to fill the vacant position of the Second Deputy President due to some irregularities orchestrated by the immediate past National President, Iyalode Alaba Lawson which did not go down well with members who openly expressed disgust at the unwarranted twist.

The election will be held today with Otunba Dele Oye, Deputy National President as a hot contender.

It became obvious that apart for the positions of National President and that of the First National Deputy, the election of officers into the new NACCIMA Executive Committee was adjudged inconclusive as attempts to conduct same outside the electoral guidelines was vehemently resisted by those who do not wish the new president to assume office on a shaky note and atmosphere filled with acrimony.

Members wondered why Iyalode Alaba Lawson vainly attempted to impose her cronies on the Association which if allowed would have introduced an unholy dimension into process and bring about the question of legitimacy of the affected officers.

However on the ascension of the very calm New NACCIMA President, Hajia Saratu Iya Aliyu, handled the matter with maturity and refused to take side with illegality.

Immediately after ascension to office, she issued a statement which unequivocally states that the 59th AGM was not properly adjourned and will continue this morning. The pronouncement added value and indeed calmed hot nerves.

Text of her statement reads:
“Dear Esteemed Members of the NACCIMA Family, I wish to express my sincere appreciation on my election as the NACCIMA National President at the 59th AGM and that of Ide John C. Udeagbala as the First Deputy President.

“It is an enormous honour and privilege to be entrusted with the leadership of our great Association.

“I also wish to convey my sincere appreciation for the maturity and restraint exhibited by all parties on the outcome of the AGM.

“In view of the manifest objection to nominations and the failure to properly adjourn the meeting to the nominations of candidates to other offices, I hereby give notice pursuant to Articles 30 and 31 of the Articles of Association, that the 59th AGM will continue tomorrow at 9.00am prompt on 16th May, 2019 at Hotel Seventeen, 6 Tafawa Balewa Way/Lafiya Road, Kaduna, Kaduna State for the finalization of outstanding agenda of the AGM”.

It is expected that the rest of the process will be concluded this morning and the AGM will draw to a logical close.

At this moment, it is pertinent to caution all concerned blocs namely: South, East and North to tow the path of equity, justice, fair play and good conscience hence anything contrary to these will throw the entire Nigerian Organised Private Sector (OPS) into disarray. This should not be allowed to happen.
