Nigeria Begins Local Production of Dual-Active Mosquito Nets, Targets 10m Annually.
Nigeria has commenced local production of next-generation dual-active insecticide-treated mosquito nets, with the new facility expected to produce approximately 10 million nets annually at full capacity and create more than 600 jobs.
The facility, Health Textiles Nigeria FZE, wholly owned by Vestergaard Sàrl, is located in the Lagos Free Zone and is the first in Nigeria to manufacture dual-active ingredient insecticide-treated mosquito nets.
The facility will produce PermaNet® Dual, a next-generation mosquito net designed to help combat the growing challenge of insecticide resistance. The product combines two active ingredients, deltamethrin and chlorfenapyr, to improve protection against mosquitoes that have developed resistance to conventional insecticides.
The development is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s domestic healthcare manufacturing capacity, support supply-chain resilience, promote technology transfer and develop skilled manpower in the health manufacturing sector.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, said the investment demonstrated what could be achieved when government policy, private-sector investment and technology transfer were aligned to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare value chain.
“This investment demonstrates what is possible when government policy, private-sector investment and technology transfer come together to unlock Nigeria’s healthcare value chain,” Pate said.
Health Textiles Nigeria has already recruited about 80 employees who are undergoing training in manufacturing excellence, product quality, occupational health and safety, and regulatory compliance. The workforce is expected to grow to more than 600 as production reaches full capacity.
The establishment of the facility follows a 2024 Memorandum of Understanding between Vestergaard and the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC) to strengthen local production of essential health products. With production now underway, the project represents another step towards linking Nigeria’s healthcare needs with local manufacturing, investment, skills development and job creation.
