OOU, CBN Abeokuta Deepen University-Industry Partnership for Financial Sector Development.

The Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) has moved to strengthen its collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Abeokuta Branch, as part of efforts to bridge the gap between academic training and industry practice in Nigeria’s financial sector.

The initiative followed a recent courtesy visit by a delegation from the university’s Department of Banking and Finance to the CBN Abeokuta Branch, aimed at deepening institutional relations, promoting knowledge exchange and exposing academic staff to emerging developments in banking, finance and economic policy.

The delegation was led by the Director, OOU Business School, Prof. Bamidele Ilo, and included the Head of the Department of Banking and Finance, Dr. James Obadeyemi; Chairman, OOU Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Ganiyu Yinusa; and other senior faculty members.

They were received by the CBN Abeokuta Branch Controller, Mr. Malik Ademola, alongside members of the branch’s management team.

Speaking during the engagement, Prof. Ilo stressed the need for stronger partnerships between universities and financial institutions to ensure that academic curricula, teaching and research remain responsive to the realities and evolving demands of the financial sector.

He noted that closer collaboration with institutions such as the CBN could provide opportunities for joint research, policy engagements, knowledge exchange, staff development, guest lectures, seminars and joint publications, among other initiatives.

According to him, sustained interaction between academia and industry would help expose students and lecturers to practical developments in the banking and financial system while strengthening the relevance of university research to national economic challenges.

“Regular engagement with financial institutions will help bridge the gap between classroom theory and professional practice, while providing students and academic staff with deeper insight into real-world developments in the financial sector,” he said.

Prof. Ilo expressed optimism that the engagement would evolve into a stronger institutional partnership focused on financial research, capacity building, professional development and knowledge sharing.

The two institutions reaffirmed their commitment to sustained collaboration, recognising that stronger university-industry partnerships are essential to developing a skilled workforce, supporting evidence-based policy and strengthening Nigeria’s financial sector.

The university explained that the visit formed part of its broader efforts to establish strategic partnerships with key public and private-sector institutions in support of its teaching, research, innovation and community development objectives.

The collaboration, if sustained, is expected to contribute to the development of industry-relevant skills among students while creating a stronger platform for academia and financial-sector practitioners to exchange ideas on emerging economic and banking issues.
