The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) is pursuing a strategic collaboration with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to strengthen Nigeria’s international reputation, promote responsible citizenship and improve the country’s prospects for trade and investment.
The initiative emerged from a high-level engagement between a NACCIMA delegation and the Director-General of the NOA, Mr Lanre Issa-Onilu, during a meeting tagged “An Evening with the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency.” Discussions centred on the role of national image management, public enlightenment and constructive international engagement in advancing Nigeria’s economic and diplomatic interests.
Representing NACCIMA National President, Engr. Jani Ibrahim, Mni the delegation comprised the Association’s National Public Relations Officer, Hajia Madinat Adigun-Oladotun; its China Relations Executive, Arc. Zakirudeen Oladotun; and communications specialist, Mr Ismail Omipidan.
Speaking on behalf of the Association, Adigun-Oladotun underscored the economic significance of Nigeria’s reputation, noting that a country’s international standing can influence investor confidence, commercial partnerships and access to overseas markets for locally produced goods and services.
She emphasised that Nigerians have a shared responsibility to project a credible national image, regardless of where they live or conduct their affairs. The Association also cautioned against the spread of misleading information and reckless public commentary capable of damaging diplomatic relationships or weakening the country’s economic interests.
NACCIMA commended Issa-Onilu for initiatives aimed at strengthening civic responsibility, patriotism and positive values among young Nigerians. The Association noted that sustained public orientation could help foster a citizenry that understands the connection between individual conduct, national reputation and economic progress.
Under the proposed collaboration, both organisations are working towards public enlightenment programmes designed to engage the business community, media practitioners, professional bodies and youth groups. The planned activities are expected to promote cultural diplomacy, responsible communication across borders and a more constructive approach to Nigeria’s engagement with the international community.
For Nigeria’s organised private sector, the initiative presents an opportunity to reinforce the relationship between national reputation and economic competitiveness. A credible country image can help create a more favourable environment for foreign direct investment, encourage international business relationships and strengthen confidence in Nigerian enterprises seeking to expand beyond domestic markets.
As the proposed partnership progresses, its effectiveness will depend on sustained stakeholder participation and the translation of advocacy into practical public education and responsible civic engagement. A coordinated effort by government institutions, businesses, the media and citizens could help position Nigeria as a dependable partner in international commerce and cooperation.
