Binance Resumes Withdrawals After $6.3bn Crypto Heist, Replenishes 95% of Stolen Assets

Exchange pledges to absorb losses as security breach raises concerns over cryptocurrency market stability and investor confidence

November 2, 2026

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has resumed customer withdrawals following a major security breach that resulted in the theft of approximately $6.3 billion in digital assets.

The resumption, which began on Sunday, November 1, followed a temporary suspension of withdrawals as the exchange strengthened its security systems, assessed the impact of the attack and verified the readiness of affected services.

In its latest security update, Binance said it had replenished approximately 95 per cent of the affected assets using its financial resources, including corporate funds and other reserves. The exchange reiterated that it would bear the financial impact of the theft rather than transfer the losses to customers. The remaining five per cent comprises less-liquid tokens that require additional time to source.

The phased restoration of withdrawals covers major cryptocurrencies and selected digital assets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB, Solana and several stablecoins. Binance said additional tokens and networks would become available as security and operational checks are completed. The exchange is also working with law enforcement agencies and industry partners to trace and recover the stolen funds.

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) attributed the attack to TraderTraitor, a hacking group linked to North Korea. The incident has intensified concerns about the vulnerability of cryptocurrency platforms to sophisticated cyberattacks and the growing financial risks associated with digital asset transactions.

The breach has also raised questions about investor confidence and the resilience of cryptocurrency markets. News of the attack contributed to market volatility, while the suspension of withdrawals heightened concerns about customers’ access to their assets. Binance has maintained that it is committed to protecting customer funds and strengthening its security infrastructure.

The incident underscores the importance of cybersecurity, transparent risk management and effective safeguards in the digital asset industry. Although Binance’s commitment to replenish the affected assets may help reassure customers, the scale of the breach highlights the potential financial and reputational consequences of security failures at major cryptocurrency exchanges.

For businesses and investors exploring digital assets, the development reinforces the need to assess platform security, custody arrangements, operational risks and the reliability of asset-backed claims before committing funds. Stronger security protocols, industry-wide collaboration and timely disclosure of security incidents will remain critical to building confidence in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Binance said it would continue replenishing the outstanding assets, monitoring for residual security risks and strengthening its protective measures. The exchange also pledged to publish a detailed incident report after investigations are concluded.
