TETFund Extends Research Fair Deadline to October 11, Targets Stronger Research-to-Market Links
ABUJA, October 4, 2026: The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has extended the application deadline for its Second National Research Fair and Exhibition to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, 2026, giving researchers, inventors and innovators additional time to submit entries for the event.
In a circular signed by its Executive Secretary, Arc. Sonny S. T. Echono, the Fund said the extension followed initial glitches on the submission portal and requests from various stakeholders. It stressed that there would be no further extension.
The fair is scheduled for November 24 to 27, 2026, at the Abuja Trade and Convention Centre, Airport Road, Abuja, with activities beginning at 9:00 a.m. daily. Its theme is “Research to Market: Driving Innovation, Enterprise and National Prosperity.”
The announcement comes as TETFund seeks to strengthen connections between Nigerian research outputs and commercial opportunities. The official event portal describes the second edition as a platform for linking indigenous innovations and inventions with large-scale commercialisation. (researchfair.tetfund.gov.ng)
The initiative builds on the maiden National Research Fair and Exhibition, held at Eagle Square, Abuja, from November 17 to 21, 2024. According to TETFund’s account of that event, the exhibition brought together research outcomes from its beneficiary institutions and innovations from the formal and informal sectors, with the aim of connecting inventors to industry for prototype development, scaling and commercialisation.
At the inaugural fair, Echono explained that the Fund wanted research outputs to address societal problems, improve living standards and support job and wealth creation. The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, also urged financial institutions, including commercial banks, to support enterprises built around home-grown technologies.
A documented example of the fair’s commercial potential is the G-Smart Monitor, developed by researchers at the University of Ilorin. The device uses connected technology to help farmers monitor greenhouse conditions in real time through a mobile application, supporting decisions intended to reduce crop damage and improve productivity.
In a December 2024 report, the university said the product had been exhibited at the inaugural fair and had attracted an investor willing to partner with the team on large-scale production and marketing. That report recorded investor interest and readiness for commercialisation, rather than confirmed completion of mass production.
Preparations for the 2026 edition have placed renewed emphasis on wider participation. Speaking at the inauguration of the organising committee in July, Echono said the platform would extend beyond institutions benefiting from TETFund interventions to Nigerians who had developed products, services or inventions.
The expanded committee includes representatives of the organised private sector, community inventors, innovation hubs, relevant ministries and the Nigerian military. Its remit includes strengthening partnerships involving investors, entrepreneurs, intellectual property specialists and technology licensing professionals.
For the business community, this approach points to opportunities to identify locally developed technologies, explore manufacturing partnerships and assess innovations with commercial potential. The practical value of those connections will depend on subsequent investment, licensing, production and market adoption.
Under the revised application arrangements, interested participants must complete the Universal Screening Questionnaire or its online equivalent and submit it with supporting documents before the October 11 deadline.
The circular lists researchfair.tetfund.gov.ng, www.tetfund.gov.ng, www.nrf.tetfund.gov.ng and www.teras.ng as channels for accessing the application process.
Shortlisted applicants will receive notifications by email and through text or WhatsApp messages, followed by guidance on exhibition, matchmaking or symposium logistics.
