ACCI, Recyclers Association of Nigeria Hold Webinar on Circular Economy, Green Business Opportunities
ABUJA — The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), through its Sustainability and Business Development Unit under the BEST Centre, partnered with the Recyclers Association of Nigeria (RAN) to host a webinar on the growing role of circular business models in Nigeria’s economy.
The webinar, themed “The Future is Circular: How Green Businesses Are Shaping Nigeria’s New Economy,” held virtually on Zoom on Thursday, 27th August 2026, and drew participation from business owners, sustainability practitioners and industry stakeholders across sectors.
Declaring the webinar open, the 1st Deputy President of ACCI, Prof. Adesoji Adesugba, welcomed participants on behalf of the Chamber’s leadership and situated the discussion within a wider public health and urban resilience context. He referenced his recent commentary on Lagos’s worsening refuse crisis, in which he had argued that uncollected waste poses a genuine public health risk and that Nigerian cities need a functioning circular waste economy in which materials are segregated, recovered, recycled, composted and, where possible, converted to energy, rather than merely moved from one location to another. He described the businesses that master circularity as gaining an advantage that extends beyond compliance, protecting public health and positioning themselves ahead of shifting regulation and consumer expectation.
The President of the Recyclers Association of Nigeria followed with welcome remarks on behalf of RAN, underscoring the importance of collaboration between business associations and the recycling sector in building sustainable value chains, before introducing the session’s facilitator.
The main presentation was delivered by Mrs Temitope Okunnu, who took participants through how green businesses across Nigeria are adopting recycling, resource efficiency and eco-conscious practices to reduce costs, create jobs and build resilience into their operations. The presentation was followed by an interactive question and answer session, during which participants engaged the facilitator on the practical realities of scaling circular business models in the Nigerian context.
During the session, organisers also drew attention to the Sustainable Business COP (SB COP) Awards 2026, an international call for submissions open to private-sector initiatives that demonstrate scalable, innovative and measurable climate and sustainability impact. Selected initiatives are expected to be announced in October 2026 and showcased at Pre-COP and COP31 events. Applications close on 15th September 2026.
Closing the session, the Deputy Director General of ACCI thanked participants, speakers and RAN for their partnership, and encouraged businesses to reach out to the Chamber’s Sustainability and Business Development Unit to explore how they might begin or deepen their own circular economy initiatives.
