FirstBank Plc has commissioned a Digital Experience Centre at Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, formerly the University of Abuja, as part of efforts to deepen digital banking adoption, expand financial access and improve service delivery within Nigeria’s higher education institutions.
Located at the university’s permanent site in Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory, the facility is expected to serve more than 40,000 potential customers, including students, members of staff and other residents of the university community, with access to banking services 24 hours a day.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Tuesday, FirstBank’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Olusegun Alebiosu, said the initiative was designed to encourage customers to embrace digital banking and undertake essential financial transactions without relying solely on conventional banking halls.
He explained that the centre provides a range of self-service banking solutions, including cash withdrawals, ATM card replacement, account balance enquiries, bank statement requests, funds transfers and updates to customers’ personal information, such as phone numbers and email addresses.
Alebiosu noted that the facility incorporates advanced security features, including facial recognition and fingerprint verification, to safeguard customers’ accounts and personal information, particularly when carrying out sensitive transactions.
He added that the initiative was also aimed at attracting younger customers, particularly members of Generation Z, whose increasing familiarity with technology presents opportunities for expanding digital financial services. He further disclosed that FirstBank plans to replicate the innovation across additional university campuses.
The Vice-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, welcomed the development, describing the centre as a valuable addition that would improve access to banking services and enhance convenience for students and staff.
Fawehinmi also disclosed that the university and FirstBank had established security arrangements, including round-the-clock surveillance, to protect the facility and support its uninterrupted operation.
The development reflects the growing adoption of technology-driven solutions in Nigeria’s banking industry, as financial institutions continue to invest in digital infrastructure to improve customer experience, broaden financial inclusion and reduce dependence on traditional banking channels.
For the university community, the centre is expected to provide more convenient access to essential financial services while strengthening collaboration between the banking sector and educational institutions.
