Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national football team, the Flamingos, have made history by winning the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, following a thrilling 2-1 victory over Japan in Saturday’s final.

The historic triumph marks Nigeria’s first-ever title in the competition and makes the country the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup since its inception in 2008. The achievement also represents the first FIFA Women’s World Cup title won by an African women’s national team at any level.

The Flamingos demonstrated remarkable determination and attacking quality against their Japanese counterparts, taking the lead in the 39th minute through Awawu Bashiru, whose effort gave Nigeria a deserved advantage before the half-time break.

Nigeria strengthened its position just two minutes into the second half when Oluebube Umejiaku found the back of the net in the 47th minute, doubling the team’s lead and bringing the young Nigerians closer to the coveted trophy.

Japan, however, refused to surrender, reducing the deficit in the 80th minute through Fuki Ito, setting up a tense closing period. The Nigerian girls maintained their composure, defensive discipline and determination to preserve their advantage until the final whistle.

The victory capped an impressive turnaround for the team, coached by Akeem Busari, which began its campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland before recovering to record six consecutive victories, including triumphs over Brazil in the semi-finals and Japan in the final.

Beyond the team’s collective achievement, Nigeria’s Oluebube Umejiaku emerged as one of the tournament’s outstanding performers, winning the prestigious adidas Golden Ball award in recognition of her exceptional contribution to the Flamingos’ historic campaign.

The victory has further strengthened Nigeria’s position in international youth football and demonstrated the immense potential of young female athletes when provided with the right opportunities, preparation and institutional support.

Nigeria’s triumph is not only a moment of national pride but also a significant breakthrough for African women’s football, inspiring a new generation of girls across the continent to pursue excellence in sports and compete confidently on the global stage.
